Cox Communications recently announced that they used the AWS and 700 MHz spectrum acquired at Federal Communication Commission auctions to complete a voice call and high definition video streaming using LTE.
The trials, done in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei, were conducted in Phoenix and San Diego. Even though Cox has begun LTE trials, they are still going to continue to rollout 3G. They have scheduled deployments in Virginia, California and Nebraska, demonstrating their commitment to both 3G and 4G.
Stephen Bye, Cox’s Vice President, said that they are “ultimately readying to deploy 4G wireless broadband services to meet the needs of their customers.” He went on to say that “We are encouraged by the success of the Phoenix and San Diego tests, which further validate our decision to pursue 4G based on LTE, specifically the 3GPP Release 8 standard.”
